The Hon Chris Kourakis AC

The Honourable Christopher Kourakis AC served as a judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia from 2008 and as Chief Justice from 2012 to February 2026.

In addition to presiding in the Court of Appeal Chris sat in the civil jurisdiction. He encouraged active case management of complex cases and the innovative adaption of procedures to optimise cost efficiency and the just resolution of actions. He has a particular interest in the effective use of expert evidence.

Chris formalised and expanded the role of Associate Justices in mediation and encouraged judges to mediate where circumstances did not permit the engagement of private mediators. He would not list trials unless the parties had attempted mediation.

Chris undertook mediations and facilitated conferences of experts whilst on the bench.

Chris had a broad practice at the bar which included commercial, property, trade practices and consumer, inheritance, insurance, employment and personal injury litigation. He was Solicitor -General from 2003 to 2008.

Chris was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia on 26 January 2026.

Chris has now commenced practice as a mediator in South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia.
