Gender equity

Four ladies at an awards event

Francis Burt Chambers proudly stands by the Law Council of Australia Equitable Briefing Policy. We are committed to supporting and promoting our female barristers and assisting women who are contemplating a career at the Bar. Our female barristers practise in many areas of the law and in all jurisdictions.

More broadly, we support gender equity, actively promoting the contribution and achievements of women across WA’s legal profession.

We are proud to be Gold Sponsors of the WA Woman Lawyer of the Year Awards, hosted by Women Lawyers of Western Australia. The prestigious event recognises the talent and contribution women make in all areas of our profession.

Leadership and professional development

Many members of our Chambers serve the wider legal profession in a variety of capacities, frequently in leadership roles.

The Australian Bar Association, which represents Australia’s 6,000 independent barristers, has had only five WA-based presidents since its inception in 1962. All have been members of our Chambers.

Some 19 presidents of the Law Society of Western Australia have been drawn from our Chambers, as have the overwhelming majority of presidents of the WA Bar Association, including our founder Sir Francis Burt.

Many members of our Chambers have also served as president of Women Lawyers WA, and of the Criminal Lawyers Association of WA, respectively.

Francis Burt Chambers invests in growing the skills, knowledge and competency of our future legal practitioners.

Our barristers support the WA Bar Association’s Bar Readers’ course (as well as assisting in other jurisdictions), volunteering as coaches and mentors to foster the highest standards of competence and ethical practice by people choosing to practise as independent barristers.

In support of the Law Society of Western Australia’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program, our experienced barristers also share their knowledge with industry colleagues at seminars, webinars, workshops and other industry forums.

Promoting industry excellence

Francis Burt Chambers has for a number of years been a proud sponsor of the Asian Australian Lawyers Association Lunar New Year awards, recognising practitioners who have made an outstanding contribution to diversity and inclusion in the legal profession.

We also support those who strive for academic excellence through our sponsorship, since 2014, of the Francis Burt Chambers Law Medal at Murdoch University. The medal is presented annually to the graduate with the highest academic achievement in Law.
