Francis Burt Chambers is pleased to welcome our new interstate member Chris Kourakis AC.
The Honourable Christopher Kourakis AC served on the Supreme Court of South Australia from 2008, including as Chief Justice from 2012 until February 2026, presiding in both the Court of Appeal and civil jurisdiction. He promoted active case management, procedural innovation, and cost‑effective dispute resolution, with a particular focus on the effective use of expert evidence. His leadership expanded the role of Associate Justices in mediation and encouraged judicial mediation where private mediators were unavailable, requiring parties to attempt mediation before trial.
While on the bench, he conducted mediations and facilitated expert conferences. Admitted to a broad commercial practice at the bar, he also served as Solicitor‑General from 2003 to 2008. Appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2026, he now practises as a mediator in South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia.
