Mr French served as Chief Justice of Australia from 1 September 2008 until his retirement from that position on 29 January 2017. Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice, Mr French served as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 1986 to 2008. During that period he also served as President of the National Native Title Tribunal from 1994 to 1998 and as a Deputy President of the Australian Competition Tribunal from 2005 to 2008. Mr French is an International Judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court and of the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts. He is a Visiting Judge of the Supreme Court of Fiji.
Mr French is on the list of arbitrators of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre. He is also Patron of the Australian Disputes Centre.
